Why "The Bad Batch" animated series is a gamble for Disney+
Updated: Jul 16, 2020
According to StarWars.com, Disney+ has its next animated series from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Bad Batch. This seems to be a spinoff of the highly praised, Star Wars The Clone Wars. It's unclear if it will be the same animation style but it will be a continued story of Clone Force 99 streaming in a home near you in 2021.
Below is the series synopsis provided:
The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch(first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.
When the final season of The Clone Wars dropped on Disney+ in early 2020, there was a lot of curiosity shared by fans if Clone Force 99 could or would lead it's own story. At the time it felt those stories would unfold in the comics based on comments by Dave Filoni that his beloved series was wrapped with the final four-episode arc, The Seige of Mandalore.
It's an interesting pick to go with this ragtag group of clones. It's common knowledge for those who follow The Clone Wars that there are several episodes of the final season that never made it to Disney+. They were stories not completed. This includes a show down between bouty hunters Boba Fett and Cad Bane and an extensive arc with Asajj Ventress. Those stories were converted into the canon novel, Dark Disciple. Still, fans may be disappointed those stories will remain untold on the screen.
A really exciting element is that this is the first animated series to debut from start to finish on Disney+. Clone Wars finished on Disney+ but by no means can the streaming platform claim it. There were many of fans who rushed home on Thursday nights starting in 2008 to catch The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network. That rant over. Just like The Mandalorian with it's scale, story-lines, characters, and movie-like budget; it will be fascinating to learn what is the quality of an animated series slated specifically for release on Disney+. What is the "The Volume" virtual set was designed to create The Mandalorian. Is there an equivalent for this upcoming animated series? We will all find out together next year.
The crew assembled to tell this story is damn near the A-team within the Star Wars storytelling world.
