Disney+ unveils trailer for LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special
"'Twas the night before Life Day, in a galaxy far, far away"
So begins the trailer for the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, dropping on Disney+ this November. Like other Star Wars stories that have gotten the LEGO treatment, this one promises to be light, silly, a little meta but with a whole lot of heart.
As Yoda narrates, we see Finn, Poe, Rose and the whole gang getting ready to celebrate Life Day in style. But Rey, feeling a call to adventure finds herself in a mysterious Jedi cave, where she uncovers a "key" - one that looks awfully like two kyber crystals tied together - that unlocks a portal to the past. she falls through it...
...and lands right on top of Luke Skywalker as he is making his iconic Death Star trench run.
From there we learn that the crystal Rey found is indeed a key to travelling space and time, which Palpatine decides will be his key to changing the future of the galaxy as we know it.
We see lots of old friends, and new friends, as characters from the PT era, OT era and even ST era are thrown together through what looks like many, many portals in time. We've got young Han and old Han fighting side by side. We have both Anakin and Vader appearing in what looks like the climactic final fight on Tatooine. We even have an appearance of The Child himself.
Yes, that's right. Baby Yoda will be making an appearance in the special.
The special looks like it's going to hit all the traditional beats of a good Christmas special: some adventure, a lot of comedy, and an emphasis on love and family. For me personally, I'm hoping for a little beat in that big final fight where Kylo Ren switches sides and fights alongside his parents, because it's no secret Ben Solo is one of my favorite characters. That said, the one scene of him we do get in the trailer is absolute gold.
As with any Star Wars trailer, this one is packed with Easter eggs and gags. Here are my top five:
5. Admiral Ackbar (back from the dead!) giving Lando a shawl for Life Day and proudly exclaiming "It's a wrap!"
4. A lightsaber duel...on top of podracers!
3. That one shot of Baby Yoda where Rey and Vader pause their fight to agree how cute he is.
2. Revenge of the Sith Anakin and Obi Wan bumping into someone who looks an awful lot like Phantom Menace Anakin.
When Vader spots A New Hope era Luke and exclaims "my son!" before immediately backtracking and trying to pretend he was talking about the twin suns on Tatooine all along.
