Disney announces three new untitled Star Wars movies for theatrical release

Updated: May 8, 2019

Movie fans received thrilling news Tuesday that Star Wars will have a short theatrical hiatus after the release of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker this December. Three new movies are slated for theatrical release starting December 2022.

Lucasfilm Publicist, Chris Argyropoulos shared this tweet Tuesday morning.

According to Variety, these release dates are made possible with the shifting of release dates for James Cameron's four "Avatar" sequels. Those movies will now release:

Avatar 2” on December 17, 2021 instead of December 18, 2020

“Avatar 3” on December 22, 2023 instead of December 17, 2021

“Avatar 4” on December 19, 2025 instead of December 20, 2024

But who is involved with these movies?

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were selected to write "a series of Star Wars moves," on February 6th 2018. Then in February 11th of 2019, HBO exec Casey Bloys confirmed the series was a trilogy of films. Many fans have hopes the pair will direct movies in the Old Republic era, based on the popular video game franchise released on July 15, 2003, that takes players to a time 4,000 years before the original trilogy. Before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm announced Director Rian Johnson would write and direct a new trilogy of films set in a different point of the Star Wars timeline with brand new characters. Johnson's installment in the Star Wars galaxy in December 2017 has been met with controversy. While a rumor took social media by storm that Johnson was taken off the project, he confirmed on Twitter back on February 13th that he was still writing the movies, 2019.

Walt Disney Studios released a massive scheduling change that reflects the company's merger with 21st Century Fox's film properties. A deal that cost Disney $71.3 billion dollars. Below are print screens of the list of released films from Walt Disney Studios Tuesday.
